From this lesson the course moves towards the grammar of JLPT N4 and JFT-Basic. The patterns are small, but they let you say much more about yourself: what you have experienced, what you are able to do, and what you usually do.
1. Experience: 〜た ことが あります
I have (ever) done
た-form + ことが あります / ことが ありません
Remember the た-form from Course 2 (Lesson 22): たべた, いった, みた, した. The question is 〜た ことが ありますか.
| Japanese | Romaji | नेपाली | English | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| すしを たべた ことが あります。 | sushi o tabeta koto ga arimasu. | मैले सुशी खाएको छु। | I have eaten sushi. | ▶ |
| しんかんせんに のった ことが ありますか。 | shinkansen ni notta koto ga arimasu ka. | बुलेट ट्रेन चढेको छ? | Have you ever ridden a bullet train? | ▶ |
| いいえ、まだ のった ことが ありません。 | iie, mada notta koto ga arimasen. | छैन, अझै चढेको छैन। | No, I haven't yet. | ▶ |
| ふじさんに のぼった ことが ありません。 | fujisan ni nobotta koto ga arimasen. | म फुजी पर्वत चढेको छैन। | I have never climbed Mt Fuji. | ▶ |
| フォークリフトを うんてんした ことが あります。 | fookurifuto o unten shita koto ga arimasu. | मैले फोर्कलिफ्ट चलाएको छ। | I have driven a forklift. | ▶ |
| にほんへ きた ことが ありますか。 | nihon e kita koto ga arimasu ka. | तपाईं पहिले जापान आउनुभएको छ? | Have you been to Japan before? | ▶ |
A different pattern looks similar: dictionary form + ことが あります means something happens sometimes: ときどき ねぼうする ことが あります (I sometimes oversleep).
2. Ability: ことが できます and potential verbs
You know 〜ことが できます (Course 2). Japanese also has a potential form, a single verb meaning "can do". It is shorter and common in speech and in tests.
- Group 1: change the final う-column sound to the え-column + る: かく → かける, のむ → のめる, いく → いける, はなす → はなせる, かう → かえる.
- Group 2: drop る, add られる: たべる → たべられる, みる → みられる.
- Group 3: する → できる, くる → こられる.
| Dictionary | Potential | Polite | Meaning | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
With a potential verb, the object usually takes が instead of を: にほんごが はなせます. The two forms mean the same: にほんごを はなす ことが できます = にほんごが はなせます.
| Japanese | Romaji | नेपाली | English | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| にほんごが すこし はなせます。 | nihongo ga sukoshi hanasemasu. | म जापानी भाषा अलिकति बोल्न सक्छु। | I can speak a little Japanese. | ▶ |
| かんじは あまり よめません。 | kanji wa amari yomemasen. | म कान्जी धेरै पढ्न सक्दिनँ। | I can't read kanji very well. | ▶ |
| さしみは たべられません。 | sashimi wa taberaremasen. | म साशिमी खान सक्दिनँ। | I can't eat sashimi. | ▶ |
| あした、なんじに こられますか。 | ashita, nanji ni koraremasu ka. | भोलि कति बजे आउन सक्नुहुन्छ? | What time can you come tomorrow? | ▶ |
| くるまを うんてんできます。 | kuruma o unten dekimasu. | म गाडी चलाउन सक्छु। | I can drive a car. | ▶ |
| パソコンが つかえます。 | pasokon ga tsukaemasu. | म कम्प्युटर चलाउन सक्छु। | I can use a computer. | ▶ |
3. Listing actions: 〜たり 〜たり します
Make the た-form and add り to each action, then end with します. It means "I do things like A and B (among other things)".
| Japanese | Romaji | नेपाली | English | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| にちようびは せんたくしたり、かいものに いったり します。 | nichiyoubi wa sentaku shitari, kaimono ni ittari shimasu. | आइतबार लुगा धुने, किनमेल जाने जस्ता काम गर्छु। | On Sundays I do things like laundry and shopping. | ▶ |
| きのうは えいがを みたり、ともだちと はなしたり しました。 | kinou wa eiga o mitari, tomodachi to hanashitari shimashita. | हिजो चलचित्र हेरेँ, साथीसँग कुरा गरेँ जस्ता काम गरेँ। | Yesterday I watched a movie and talked with a friend, among other things. | ▶ |
| あめの ひは うちで ほんを よんだり ねたり します。 | ame no hi wa uchi de hon o yondari netari shimasu. | पानी पर्ने दिन घरमा किताब पढ्ने, सुत्ने गर्छु। | On rainy days I read and sleep at home. | ▶ |
4. Only and not more than: だけ and しか〜ない
| Japanese | Romaji | नेपाली | English | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ひらがなだけ よめます。 | hiragana dake yomemasu. | म हिरागाना मात्र पढ्न सक्छु। | I can read only hiragana. | ▶ |
| にほんごが すこししか はなせません。 | nihongo ga sukoshi shika hanasemasen. | म जापानी भाषा थोरै मात्र बोल्न सक्छु। | I can speak only a little Japanese. | ▶ |
| ごひゃくえんしか ありません。 | gohyaku en shika arimasen. | मसँग ५०० येन मात्र छ। | I have only 500 yen. | ▶ |
しか is always followed by a negative verb and sounds a little like "only, and not enough". だけ just says "only".
Dialogue: a job interview
| Japanese | Romaji | नेपाली / English | Listen | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | ラムさんは にほんで はたらいた ことが ありますか。 | ramu-san wa nihon de hataraita koto ga arimasu ka. | राम जी, जापानमा काम गरेको अनुभव छ? Ram, have you ever worked in Japan? | ▶ |
| B | いいえ、ありません。 でも、ネパールの レストランで さんねん はたらきました。 | iie, arimasen. demo, nepaaru no resutoran de sannen hatarakimashita. | छैन। तर नेपालको रेस्टुरेन्टमा तीन वर्ष काम गरेँ। No, I haven't. But I worked at a restaurant in Nepal for three years. | ▶ |
| A | にほんごは はなせますか。 | nihongo wa hanasemasu ka. | जापानी भाषा बोल्न सक्नुहुन्छ? Can you speak Japanese? | ▶ |
| B | はい、かんたんな かいわなら できます。 かんじは すこししか よめません。 | hai, kantan na kaiwa nara dekimasu. kanji wa sukoshi shika yomemasen. | हजुर, सरल कुराकानी गर्न सक्छु। कान्जी थोरै मात्र पढ्न सक्छु। Yes, I can do simple conversation. I can only read a little kanji. | ▶ |
Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
