Japanese for Work and Daily Life in Japan (A2 / JFT-Basic / N4) · Lesson 15 of 20

Lesson 15: Giving, Receiving and Plans: あげる, もらう, つもり, よてい

Use あげる, くれる and もらう (and 〜てあげる, 〜てくれる, 〜てもらう), talk about plans with つもり, よてい, 〜ことにする and 〜ことになる, and the volitional form.

Lesson 15: Giving, Receiving and Plans: あげる, もらう, つもり, よてい

Japanese is careful about who gives to whom. Choosing the right verb shows respect and closeness. Then you will learn to talk about your plans and decisions, which is very useful for interviews and for everyday conversation.

Giving and receiving: あげる, くれる, もらう

VerbDirectionExampleListen
あげるI (or someone) give to another person (not to me)わたしは ともだちに はなを あげました。▶
くれるsomeone gives to me (or my family)ともだちは わたしに はなを くれました。▶
もらうI receive from someoneわたしは ともだちに はなを もらいました。▶

To a superior use the humble/respectful forms: さしあげる (I give), くださる (you give me), いただく (I receive). You already use いただきます. For N4 you only need to recognise them.

Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
