Real conversation is full of "probably", "maybe", "I think" and "you should". These patterns let you say what you are not sure about, and give gentle advice to a friend or colleague. They all use the plain form from Course 2 (Lesson 22).
Plain forms: a quick review
| Type | Present | Past | Negative |
|---|---|---|---|
| verb | いく | いった | いかない |
| い-adjective | たかい | たかかった | たかくない |
| な-adjective | しずかだ | しずかだった | しずかじゃない |
| noun | あめだ | あめだった | あめじゃない |

Advice is gentle in Japanese. To a boss, do not say "you should...". Instead ask: 〜は いかがでしょうか (how about ...?). To a friend or a junior, 〜た ほうが いいよ is fine.

Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
