Japanese for Work and Daily Life in Japan (A2 / JFT-Basic / N4) · Lesson 7 of 20

Lesson 7: Shopping, Convenience Stores and Money

Read food labels (原材料, 賞味期限), understand store questions (あたためますか), use ATMs, pay by IC card or smartphone, and send money home (そうきん).

Lesson 7: Shopping, Convenience Stores and Money

Course 2 taught you to order and to buy. Here you learn the extra words you meet every week: questions at the register, food labels (very important if you avoid some foods), ATMs, cashless payment and sending money to Nepal.

Questions at the register

JapaneseRomajiनेपालीEnglishListen
ポイントカードは おもちですか。pointo kaado wa omochi desu ka.पोइन्ट कार्ड छ?Do you have a point card?▶
ふくろは ごりようですか。fukuro wa goriyou desu ka.झोला चाहिन्छ?Do you need a bag?▶
おべんとうは あたためますか。obentou wa atatamemasu ka.बेन्तो तताउने?Shall I heat up your boxed meal?▶
おはしは おつけしますか。ohashi wa otsuke shimasu ka.चपस्टिक राखिदिऊँ?Shall I put in chopsticks?▶
おしはらいは どう なさいますか。oshiharai wa dou nasaimasu ka.भुक्तानी कसरी गर्नुहुन्छ?How would you like to pay?▶
げんきんで おねがいします。genkin de onegai shimasu.नगदमा गर्छु।Cash, please.▶
カードで おねがいします。kaado de onegai shimasu.कार्डमा गर्छु।By card, please.▶
レシートは いりません。reshiito wa irimasen.रसिद चाहिँदैन।I don't need the receipt.▶

Shop staff often speak in very polite forms (おもちですか, ごりようですか, なさいますか). You need only recognise them and answer with simple words: はい, いいえ, おねがいします, だいじょうぶです.

Reading a food label

Packaged food has a label with the same headings. If you do not eat pork, beef or fish, or have allergies, read the ingredients (げんざいりょうめい) carefully. Words like ぶた (pork), ぎゅう (beef), ゼラチン (gelatin) and ラード (lard) appear in many products. Allergen words are shown in a separate line.

Best-before (賞味期限) is a quality guide; use-by (消費期限) is a safety limit. Do not eat food after its use-by date, especially bento and sandwiches. The date is written year/month/day, in the order you learned: 2026.10.15.

Compare the exchange rate and the fee of several services before you send money (banks, post office, remittance companies and apps). A low fee with a bad rate can cost more. Use only licensed services, and never send money to a stranger who asks.

Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
