Lesson 13: Bank, Post Office and City Hall: Residence Card and Forms

Handle official errands: open a bank account, send a parcel, register at city hall (てんにゅうとどけ, じゅうみんひょう), and read and fill in a form (ふりがな, せいねんがっぴ).

Lesson 13: Bank, Post Office and City Hall: Residence Card and Forms

Official places use formal words and forms. The vocabulary repeats a lot, so once you learn it, every form looks familiar. Always bring your residence card (ざいりゅうカード) and passport.

Carry your residence card at all times. The police may ask to see it. Moving? You must report your new address to the city hall (てんにゅうとどけ, move-in notification) within 14 days, and some changes (such as your workplace or status) must be reported to immigration; ask your employer or support organisation which ones apply to you.

Some banks need a Japanese phone number and a stable address. If one bank refuses, try the post office bank (ゆうちょぎんこう) or ask your employer which bank they use for salaries.

Reading a form

Every form asks for the same information, in nearly the same order. Learn these labels once:

LabelReadingMeaningWhat to write
氏名しめいnameYour name as on the residence card (in katakana or Latin letters, as asked)
フリガナふりがなreading of the nameThe name in katakana
生年月日せいねんがっぴdate of birthYear, month, day (A.D. / 西暦)
性別せいべつsex男 (おとこ, male) / 女 (おんな, female)
国籍こくせきnationalityネパール
住所じゅうしょaddressYour address in Japan
電話番号でんわばんごうphone numberDigits with hyphens
在留カード番号ざいりゅうカードばんごうresidence card numberThe 12-character number on the card
署名しょめいsignatureYour signature (or a seal)
年月日ねんがっぴdateToday's date

Write clearly in block letters. Use the exact spelling from your passport. If you are not sure, ask これは どう かきますか (how do I write this?). Most counters will help you fill in the form. Do not leave boxes empty without asking.

Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
