Lesson 12: Phone Calls and Messages

Answer and make phone calls (もしもし, 〜さんは いらっしゃいますか), take a message (でんごん), call back, and read and write short LINE, SMS and email messages.

Lesson 12: Phone Calls and Messages

Phone calls are hard because you cannot see the face and the voice is fast. Learn the fixed phrases below; calls at work follow a script. For many everyday matters, messages (LINE, SMS, email) are easier: you can read slowly and reply when you are ready.

Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
