Lesson 11: Food and Shopping: を and ください

Eating and shopping are daily tasks, and Japan has some of the best convenience stores in the world. This lesson teaches you to order, to buy, and to explain what you cannot eat.

Asking for something: を ください

Please give me…

(thing) を ください

In a restaurant you can also say (thing) を おねがいします, which is a little more polite.

What you cannot eat

Many Nepalis do not eat beef or pork, or are vegetarian. Japanese food often hides meat or fish in the broth (だし), so ask. These sentences are very useful:

Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
