Everyday Japanese (N5/A1): Words and Grammar · Lesson 21 of 24

Lesson 21: Wanting, Inviting and Offering: たいです, ませんか, ましょう

Say what you want to do (〜たいです) or want to have (ほしいです), invite (〜ませんか, 〜ましょう) and offer help (〜ましょうか), with polite replies.

Lesson 21: Wanting, Inviting and Offering: たいです, ませんか, ましょう

Friendship and good work relationships come from invitations and offers of help. This lesson gives you three small patterns, all built on the ます stem (the verb without ます).

The ます stem

Remove ます: たべます → たべ, のみます → のみ, いきます → いき.

1. I want to…: 〜たいです

FormExampleListen
stem + たいですたべたいです (I want to eat)▶
stem + たくないですたべたくないです (I don't want to eat)▶
stem + たかったですたべたかったです (I wanted to eat)▶

〜たい behaves like an い-adjective (that is why it has たくない and たかった). The object can take を or が: すしを たべたいです or すしが たべたいです. Do not say 〜たいです about another person's wishes without a reason; it can sound direct when talking to a superior. Ask a superior 〜たいですか only with care.

3. Won't you…? Let's…: 〜ませんか, 〜ましょう

Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
