Now you put everything together. In this lesson you build a self-introduction (じこしょうかい) that you could say tomorrow to a Japanese teacher, an employer or a new classmate.
Five patterns
| Pattern | Example | Meaning | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|
| A は B です | わたしは ラムです。 | I am Ram. म राम हुँ। | ▶ |
| A は B ですか | ネパールじんですか。 | Are you Nepali? नेपाली हुनुहुन्छ? | ▶ |
| A は B じゃありません | わたしは せんせいじゃありません。 | I am not a teacher. म शिक्षक होइन। | ▶ |
| A も B です (also) | わたしも がくせいです。 | I am a student too. म पनि विद्यार्थी हुँ। | ▶ |
| A の B (of / from) | ネパールの がくせい。 | a student from Nepal. नेपालको विद्यार्थी। | ▶ |
Notice: も replaces は when you mean "also". の joins two nouns, like को in Nepali. And じゃありません is the polite negative of です (in writing you will also see ではありません).

Your self-introduction: fill in the gaps
はじめまして。 (name) です。 (country) から きました。 (study or job) です。 どうぞ よろしく おねがいします。
Example: はじめまして。 ラムです。 ネパールから きました。 がくせいです。 どうぞ よろしく おねがいします。 ▶
Practise it out loud ten times, then record yourself and compare it with the audio. Bow at the end.
Every ▶ button plays a clear computer voice, which is good for learning sounds and rhythm but is not a native speaker. Pitch (the rise and fall of the voice) can sound a little flat. Also listen to real Japanese as often as you can: videos, news for learners (NHK Easy), and Japanese people around you.
